Standard Container Loading Guide for Palm Oil Export
In the Palm Oil export business, we almost always use 20ft Containers because oil is heavy. A 40ft container would reach the maximum weight limit before it is even half full.
Here is the standard Loading Capacity Chart for a 20ft Container (Non-Palletized / Loose Loaded).
Bulk Shipment (Cheapest per Ton)
This is the most efficient way to ship oil if the customer has a facility to pump it out.
Packaging Type |
Unit Weight |
Quantity per 20ft |
Total Net Oil Weight |
| Flexibag | 21,500 kg | 1 Bag | 21.50 MT |
Jerry Cans (Most Popular for Africa/Asia)
Note: These numbers assume “Loose Loading” (stacking them by hand without wooden pallets)
to maximize space.
Packaging Type |
Unit Weight |
Quantity per 20ft |
Total Net Oil Weight |
| Jerry Can 18L | 16.2 kg | ~1,320 – 1,350 cans | ~21.5 – 22.0 MT |
| Jerry Can 20L | 18.0 kg | ~1,300 – 1,320 cans | ~23.5 – 24.0 MT |
| Jerry Can 25L | 22.5 kg | 1,050 – 1,080 cans | ~24.0 – 24.5 MT |
PET Bottles (Consumer Packs in Cartons)
Note: Bottles are packed in cardboard cartons. We count the cartons.
Bottle Size |
Carton Spec |
Cartons per 20ft |
Total Net Oil Weight |
| 1 Litre | 12 bottles / carton | ~1,750 – 1,850 cartons | ~19.5 – 20.5 MT |
| 2 Litres | 6 bottles / carton | ~1,750 – 1,850 cartons | ~19.5 – 20.5 MT |
| 5 Litres | 4 bottles / carton | ~950 – 1,000 cartons | ~17.5 – 18.5 MT |
Industrial Drums (For Factories)
Note: Standard steel or plastic drums.
Packaging Type |
Unit Weight |
Quantity per 20ft |
Total Net Oil Weight |
| Steel Drum | 190 kg | ~98 Drums | 18.62 MT |
Important Notes for Your Calculation:
1. Metric Ton (MT) Conversion: Remember that 1 Litre of Oil is NOT 1 kg.
- Specific Gravity of Palm Oil is roughly 0.915 kg/L.
- Example: An 18 Litre Jerry Can weighs about 16.47 kg (18 x 0.915).
2. Weight Limits:
In Indonesia, the maximum gross weight (Trucking + Container + Cargo) is strictly regulated. Usually, we try not to exceed 25 – 26 MT of cargo weight to avoid issues with road transport to the port (Tanjung Priok).
3. Space vs. Weight:
- Jerry Cans fill the container by Weight (it gets heavy fast).
- Cartons (Bottles) fill the container by Space (the container looks full, but it is lighter).
