Standard Container Loading Guide for Palm Oil Export
In the Palm Oil export business, we almost always use 20ft Containers because oil is heavy. A 40ft container would reach the maximum weight limit before it is even half full.
Here is the standard Loading Capacity Chart for a 20ft Container (Non-Palletized / Loose Loaded).
Bulk Shipment (Cheapest per Ton)

Important Notes for Your Calculation:
1. Metric Ton (MT) Conversion: Remember that 1 Litre of Oil is NOT 1 kg.
- Specific Gravity of Palm Oil is roughly 0.915 kg/L.
- Example: An 18 Litre Jerry Can weighs about 16.47 kg (18 x 0.915).
2. Weight Limits:
In Indonesia, the maximum gross weight (Trucking + Container + Cargo) is strictly regulated. Usually, we try not to exceed 25 – 26 MT of cargo weight to avoid issues with road transport to the port (Tanjung Priok).
3. Space vs. Weight:
- Jerry Cans fill the container by Weight (it gets heavy fast).
- Cartons (Bottles) fill the container by Space (the container looks full, but it is lighter).
